The Great Belt Fixed Link spans 18 kilometers between Zealand and Funen islands, constructed 1988-1998 as Denmark's largest engineering project. The system comprises three elements: East Bridge suspension span (1,624-meter main span, world's third-longest), East Tunnel (8-kilometer railway bore), and West Bridge box girder structure, connected via Sprogø island. Construction cost exceeded 30 billion DKK, with 254-meter pylons marking Denmark's highest self-supporting structures.

Grærup represents a unique case study in Danish military land acquisition, where the original village was completely abandoned in the late 1960s when it became incorporated into the Oksbøl Training Area. Today, the area functions as Denmark's largest military training facility at 6,500 hectares, operated by the Danish Defence and housing the Danish Artillery Regiment since 2019. The former village sites now exist as sealed "ghost towns" with painted windows.

The area encompasses significant wildlife habitat within the 11,636-hectare Natura 2000-område nr. 84, featuring Grærup Langsø, a 33-hectare protected heath lake established in 1965. The region supports Denmark's most significant free-ranging red deer population, with 50-200 individuals concentrated around the lake area, particularly active during the September-October rutting season.
